Hedge Trimming & Cutting in Cornwall
Hedge trimming in Cornwall is the regular cutting and shaping that keeps your hedges neat, healthy and under control. A hedge trimming service covers the whole job, not just the cut: the sides and top are trimmed to a clean line, tall or overgrown hedges are reduced safely, every hedge is checked for nesting birds before cutting, and all the cuttings are cleared away. Cuts can be one-off or part of a regular schedule, depending on the type of hedge and how fast it grows.
Kernow Landscape Gardening provides hedge trimming and hedge cutting for homes in Redruth, Camborne, Truro, Falmouth, Helston and across Cornwall, for homeowners, landlords and anyone whose hedge has outgrown their ladder, or their patience.
What does a hedge trimming service include?
A hedge cutting visit covers the following.
Tall and overgrown hedges
If your hedge has got away from you, I can bring it back under control with a reduction cut. Very tall hedges are reached safely from a ladder, and badly overgrown hedges are cut back in stages, so the hedge isn’t damaged by taking too much off at once.
Nesting bird checks
Every hedge is checked for nesting birds before it is cut. The main nesting season runs from March to August, and it is an offence to damage an active nest, so if I find one, the work is paused and rescheduled until the nest is no longer in use.
Looking after more than the hedge? Hedge trimming is part of my regular garden maintenance service, alongside grass cutting and weed removal.
Who is hedge trimming for?
A hedge trimming service is the right choice if:
- Your hedge is too tall to cut safely from the ground, or you don’t want to be up a ladder
- It has grown over a path, drive, window or boundary and needs cutting back
- You don’t have the time, the equipment or the energy to do it yourself
- You’re older, have limited mobility, or just want the job done properly
- You own a rental or second home and need the hedges kept presentable while you’re away
- You’re not sure when it’s safe to cut because of nesting birds and want it handled correctly
There are no minimum sizes and no judgement about how overgrown the hedge has got. If a hedge is past saving, or you’d rather replace it with a fence or new planting, that’s part of my landscaping work.
When is the best time to trim a hedge in Cornwall?
For most hedges in Cornwall, the main annual cut is best done in late summer, from August to September, once the main growth has finished. A lighter tidy in late winter or early spring, around February to March, keeps the shape before the new growing season starts.
- August to September: the main cut, after the growth flush and the peak nesting season
- February to March: a lighter tidy to keep the shape, before nesting begins
- March to August: only after every hedge has been checked for nesting birds, and paused if there is an active nest
Fast-growing hedges may need cutting two or three times a year. I’ll suggest a schedule when I see the hedge. For more on timing, nesting season and how often different hedges need cutting, see my complete guide to when to trim hedges in Cornwall.
What makes a good hedge cut?
A hedge stays thick and healthy when it’s cut the right way, not just often.
- Keep the base slightly wider than the top. This lets light reach the lower branches, so the hedge stays full right down to the bottom.
- Take it back gradually. Cutting too hard in one go can leave bare patches, especially on conifers, which often don’t regrow from old brown wood.
- Use sharp blades. A clean cut heals faster than a torn one.
- Check for nests first. It protects wildlife and keeps you on the right side of the law.
- Clear the cuttings. Leaving clippings on the ground can smother the grass and plants below.
How does it work?
- Get in touch. Call, email or send a few photos of your hedge.
- Free quote. I’ll look at the hedge (or your photos), talk through what you want, and give you a clear quote with no obligation. The price depends on the length, height and thickness of the hedge, how overgrown it is, access, and whether the cuttings need taking away.
- Agree a date. We pick a one-off cut or a regular schedule that suits you.
- Your hedge is cut. I do every visit myself, tidy up, and take the cuttings away.
